Genetically Modified Crops (GMOs) development using Gene gun

Biolistics /gene gun is an effective method for the introduction of desired DNA into the target site. It uses shock wave as the source of force for the penetration of the micro-carrier (DNA coated on gold nanoparticles) into the target cell. The integration of the gene of interest(GOI) takes place through illegitimate recombination (i.e.) the integration is not based on sequence homology. The greatest advantage of exploiting gene gun for the integration of GOI is that "clean DNA" i.e. GOI without the vector backbone can be inserted into the target genome. This phenomenon reduces the risk of gene silencing that is partly contributed by the vector backbone. On top of it, there is no need to handle Agrobacterium tumifaciens and Biolistics is a rapid method as GOI can be perfectly integrated within a matter of 5-6 hours.
